Welcome to the Lupus Interactive Educational Tool, provided by Genentech, Biogen Idec, and the International Society of Nephrology. This online version includes two modules containing animations, histology photos, and other resources to help you understand the pathology of lupus nephritis.
MODULE I: RENAL
Module I focuses on the classification of glomerulonephritis in SLE. Lupus nephritis is one of the most serious manifestations of SLE and is associated with increased mortality. Renal biopsy identifies the more severe forms of lupus nephritis that require aggressive intervention, such as the initiation of immunosuppressive therapy.
MODULE II: IMMUNOLOGIC
Module II illustrates the normal adaptive immune system and the means by which abnormal or pathologic autoimmunity can arise. The adaptive immune system allows the body to respond specifically to a tremendous variety of threats, from infections to cancers. To keep immune reactions to host tissues in check, a number of tolerance mechanisms have evolved. When these mechanisms fail, pathologic autoimmunity can occur and the reactions of the immune system to its own host can lead to pathologies such as SLE.
