Two chapters are excerpted from Genetic Diseases of the Kidney. In a background paper, Dr. R. Lifton outlines the genetic approach to human diseases. In the second chapter, the genetics of FSGS is discussed.

The role of genetic factors in the development of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in humans has become increasingly apparent in recent years. This chapter reviews the recent progress in the understanding of the role of genetic factors in disorders of podocytes related to the development of kidney disease, primarily FSGS.
