General Information

Introduced in 2006, the Nexus Symposia format was designed to bridge the gap between basic research and clinical practice by offering a profound focus on translational medicine and clinical application.

The Nexus symposia aim to address the increasingly multidisciplinary approach to kidney health issues by bringing together researchers and practicing clinicians to advance science and treatment around highly targeted and specific themes of current relevance. These meetings enable collaborations to take place with an in- depth focus on real clinical challenges and directions for future research and healthcare solutions.

This new innovative educational format is an important part of ISN’s meeting strategy; three symposia are hosted in different locations over a two year span (one in World Congress of Nephrology (WCN) years and two in off-years) Each meeting is specially structured to include:

  • One parallel-run basic and clinical session per day.
  • Followed by translational sessions which clearly link the research to practice.
  • Several interactive plenary sessions.
  • Ample networking opportunities.

The symposia are organized through the ISN Nexus and Forefronts Core Committee members who represent a range of inter-related disciplines.

Detailed information on the Nexus concept, upcoming meetings and online conference captures of past symposia can be found on the dedicated Nexus website.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2009

The ISN is currently seeking proposals from interested ‘Organizers’ for clinically relevant topics that would lend themselves for examination in the ISN Nexus Format for symposia in 2011 and beyond.

Diabetes and the Kidney: Diabetic Nephropathy
June 26 - 29, 2008, Dublin, Ireland

Transplantation and the Kidney: New Insights into Pathogenesis and Management of Chronic Allograft Dysfunction
Sept. 25 – 28, 2008, Rome, Italy

Hypertension and the Kidney: Nov. 29 – Dec. 2, 2007, Vienna, Austria
Over 400 eminent nephrologists, hypertensiologists, cardiologists and endocrinologists reviewed and discussed the cause-and-effect aspects of the kidney and blood pressure. The sessions honored and explored how Arthur C. Guyton’s pioneering Hypertension and the Kidney concept influenced research and patient management to-date and debated its future translational value in shaping therapies.

The ‘Bone and the Kidney’: Oct. 12-15, 2006, Copenhagen, Denmark

The inaugural Nexus Symposium surpassed all expectations in regards to attendance numbers, sponsorship and attendee satisfaction. The 650 attending nephrologists, endocrinologists, bone specialists and cardiologists coming from 55 countries confirmed that the new educational format was highly appreciated by a multidisciplinary audience.
Among the many highlights were sessions on calcimetics, based on the discovery of the calcium sensing receptor; the paracellular transport of magnesium and calcium; pediatric renal osteodystrophy; and the extraordinary roles of the ‘aging suppressor’ gene klotho in regulating the function of calcium channels and fibroblast growth factors in the control of renal secretion.
