FOREFRONTS SYMPOSIUM 2011

Proteinuria: From glomerular filtration to tubular handling
September 22-25, 2011, Aarhus, Denmark
Proteinuria is an important marker in renal disease and of cardiovascular risk and mortality. Advances in the understanding of underlying mechanisms and identification of specific biomarkers may lead to new strategies of intervention to prevent the progression and complications of kidney diseases.

Abstract submission opening: January 2011

General Information

Forefronts in Nephrology Symposia have played an important educational role for nephrologists since 1984 by offering a specific focus on emerging and ground-breaking research. The events gather Nephrologists and active investigators from other fields to stimulate exposure to new scientific domains and review the latest developments in kidney disease; the interactive format allows nephrologists to develop a collegial relationship with leading researchers from other disciplines. Approximately half of the invited speakers are non-nephrologists.

Typically three events are hosted over a two year span (one in World Congress of Nephrology (WCN) years and two in off-years). ISN Forefronts symposia are structured to:

  • Include educational and scientific sessions.
  • Include abstract-based poster sessions and presentations to enhance discussions and to boost interaction among participants.
  • Be small in size with participation limited to a maximum of 150 working scientists who are selected based on their documented interest in the symposium topic.
  • Allow for in-depth coverage of the topic and exchange of ideas.

The programs are carefully selected by the ISN Nexus and Forefronts Core Committee members who represent a range of inter-related disciplines, to ensure that the focus remains on cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs.

The ISN - Nature Genetics Forefronts Symposium on Nephrogenetics: from development to physiology
March 8-11, 2007, Danvers, USA
This partnership was marked with a prestigious scientific publication – Nature Genetics – for the Forefronts series. The event focused on synthesizing an integrated view of the normal development and functions of the kidney from the genetic standpoint and provided the perfect forum for exchange of ideas between nephrologists and geneticists.

Endothelial Biology and Renal Disease
March 16-19, 2006, Pallisades, New York, USA
The symposium attracted 107 scientists and covered topics such as endothelium in insulin resistance, endoplasmic reticulum stress, arachidonic acid metabolites and their actions on endothelium, and prevention of endothelial dysfunctions in renal diseases.

Renal and Extrarenal Regulation of Potassium
Sept. 8-11, 2005, Kartause Ittingen, Switzerland
The symposium brought together an international group of 30 experts from 10 countries to discuss cutting-edge research, attracting an audience of 75 scientists.
