Cancer is one of the leading causes of death and is rapidly becoming a global pandemic. Cancer patients with kidney disease have a worse prognosis with higher mortality and morbidity.
The emergence of onconephrology represents a field dedicated to understanding and treating the complex renal problems that arise in cancer patients. The American Society of Nephrology created an onconephrology forum in 2010, setting the stage for the growth and development in this new subspecialty. Major cancer centers in the United States have started onconephrology fellowships as part of nephrology training.
On September 26, 2015, in Manhasset (Long Island), New York, a symposium for nephrologists and cancer specialists will be hosted by the Hofstra North ShoreLIJ School of Medicine and North ShoreLIJ Health System. This symposium is endorsed by the American Society of Nephrology, Cancer & the Kidney International Network, International Society of Nephrology, and National Kidney Foundation.
This course, which is a CME conference designated for AMA PRA Category 1 credit, will feature lectures and workshops that will enable participants to refine their knowledge of novel cancer agents and their nephrotoxicites and learn about the novel agents available in treatment of Thrombotic Microangiopathies (TMAs) and manage complications of cancer that affects the kidney.
