World Kidney Day celebrations at the Western Hospital, Sri Lanka

Western Hospital in Borella, Sri Lanka conducted a special program to mark the 11th World Kidney Day on March 10, 2016.

This program started at 8am with a rally and a walk, specially designed to educate people about kidney disease. Balloons and white doves were released to make the event colorful.

Chief Guest of the Opening Ceremony was Dr. Vindya Gunasekara, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon, who made a presentation on the theme of Kidney Disease & Children – Act Early to prevent it.

Guests of honor included Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva, Deputy Director General at the Medical Services of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka and Dr. Kanthi Ariyaratne, Director at the Private Health Sector, who also spoke about kidney disease, children and prevention.

Prof. Rezvi Sheriff, Pioneer Nephrologist in Sri Lanka who organized this program was also present and made a speech on the causes of kidney disease.

A free kidney disease screening clinic was conducted from 10am to 5pm. About 250 patients were seen, tested and necessary advice given.

There was also a cricket match organized by the Sri Lanka Kidney Patients Association involving recipients and donors and it was the donor team that won the match. The Prof. Rezvi Sheriff Challenge Trophy was awarded to the winning team.
