Identification of thrombospondin 1 (TSP-1) as a novel mediator of cell injury in kidney ischemia

Journal of Clinical Investigation : 1 December 2005

This study identifies a ECM protein, thrombospondin-1, as a mediator of ischemia-repefusion injury. This may prove to be a therapeutic target in the future for the treatment of ATN/AKI.

A Trial of Contraceptive Methods in Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

New England Journal of Medicine : 1 December 2005

At long last, the question of which contraceptive to use in women with SLE has been answered.

Efficacy and Safety of Benazepril for Advanced Chronic Renal Insufficiency

New England Journal of Medicine : 12 January 2006

Are ACE-inhibitors effective (and safe) in preventing renal progression in patients with low GFR levels. This study from China attempts to answer this vexing question.

Hepatocyte Growth Factor Is a Downstream Effector that Mediates the Antifibrotic Action of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor- Agonists

Journal of American Society of Nephrology : 1 January 2006

Hepatocyte growth factor has been shown to ameliorate acute and chronic renal failure in animal models. PPAR-gamma agonists have been shown to limit fibrosis in animal models of CKD. This study provides evidence that the action of PPAR-gamma agonist is, in part, mediated via transciptional activation of the HGF gene.

Use of Allopurinol in Slowing the Progression of Renal Disease Through Its Ability to Lower Serum Uric Acid Level

American Journal of Kidney Diseases : 1 January 2006

This small study suggests that lowering of serum uric acid levels with allopurinol may provide additional benefit in slowing the progression of CKD.

Uterine sensitization-associated gene-1 (USAG-1), a novel BMP antagonist expressed in the kidney, accelerates tubular injury

Journal of Clinical Investigation : 1 January 2006

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-7 has been shown in animal models to reverse the fibrosis of CKD. These authors show that a gene knock-out model of a BMP-7 antagonist which is expressed in the kidney (uterine sensitization-associated gene (USAG)-1) promotes improved renal function in both acute and chronic models of renal injury and may be another promising target for therapy in acute and chronic renal disease.

Combined Oral Contraceptives in Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

New England Journal of Medicine : 1 December 2005

At long last, the question of which contraceptive to use in women with SLE has been answered.

Effect of inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system and other antihypertensive drugs on renal outcomes: systematic review and meta-analysis

The Lancet : 1 December 2005

This metaanalysis questions the premise that ACE-inhibitors and ARB's have protective effects beyond BP control on the progression of chronic kidney disease

A pilot study using mycophenolate mofetil in relapsing or resistant ANCA small vessel vasculitis

Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation : 1 December 2005

This is a small study from Falk and Jennette suggesting the use of mycophenylate mofetil in some forms of ANCA-associated vasculitis.

The leukotriene B4 receptor antagonist ONO-4057 inhibits mesangioproliferative changes in anti-Thy-1 nephritis

Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation : 1 December 2005

This study provides additional evidence for the role of prostanoids in mediating some forms of glomerulonephritis.

The sialoadhesin (CD169) expressing a macrophage subset in human proliferative glomerulonephritis

Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation : 1 December 2005

This study identifies a subset of macrophages involved in mediating an experimental form of mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis.

Identification of autoantibody clusters that best predict lupus disease activity using glomerular proteome arrays

Journal of Clinical Investigation : 1 December 2005

This study using proteome arrays to aid in the identification of pathogenetic auto-antibodies in lupus nephritis.
