History and Purpose On October 23, 2002, The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the PKD Foundation (PKDF) jointly announced the creation of the Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize for Advancement in the Understanding of Polycystic Kidney Disease [PKD]. This prize will be awarded to a medical professional or researcher exhibiting excellence and leadership in PKD research every two years at the ISN’s World Congress of Nephrology. The $50,000 USD cash prize is one of the most significant awards in the medical research field. The Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize has been established through the generosity of Mr. Thomas Kaplan, New York, USA, in honor of his late mother Lillian Jean Kaplan who died of the disease in early 2002. The purpose of the award is to stimulate interest in advancing PKD research leading to new treatments and a cure. Description of the Award An award of $50,000 USD payable in American funds to an individual winner will be made at the Biennial Congress of the ISN. A joint award for the same discovery or contribution may be given, usually to no more than two individuals. Awards are presented in person at the biennial Congresses of the ISN to each winner. In addition to the $50,000 USD Prize, a citation depicting the winner?s work and a sculpture will be presented. Nominations Requirements: Open to residents of any country without restriction.
