Teaching across the developing world

Every year, the ISN Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program brings essential teaching and training to some 14,000 doctors and healthcare practitioners in the emerging world. Organized between the ISN Program Chair, the event organizers and the regional committees, these courses establish a suitable scientific program developed to meet the needs of the local nephrology community.

Over 200 speakers, including the world’s leading authorities in the field, participate in this program on a voluntary basis. They are dedicated to sharing their knowledge with doctors, specialists and nurses in underserved parts of the world.

ISN selects and sponsors the travel of up to three expert nephrologists to take part in the course. They give a minimum of two lectures each. Prevention, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) dialysis and transplantation are among the most requested topics presented at CMEs. Virtually every national nephrology society worldwide has partnered with ISN to offer education programs on prevention, dialysis and/or transplantation.

ISN CME Program offers support to local meeting organizers including:

• Help and advise in establishing a suitable scientific program developed to meet the precise needs of the local nephrological community
• Advice in selecting expert speakers in relation to the scientific program
• Funding travel of a maximum of three ISN Program sponsored speakers
• Involving ISN regional sub-committee for advice and support

Programs typically focus on:

• Clinical Nephrology (including acute kidney injury, diabetes, hypertension, glomerulonephritis, kidney in cardiovascular disease and other topics)
• Critical Care nephrology
• Prevention of CKD
• Translational nephrology
• Hemodialysis
• Peritoneal Dialysis
• Transplantation
• Renal Pathology
• Tropical Nephrology

Since 2011 ISN initiated a new program to have one meeting in each region every two years that will is designated an ISN Regional Workshop. Workshops are added to scheduled CMEs or regional meetings. These workshops are a unique opportunity for leaders of ISN Programs in each region (Regional Committees, Fellowship, Sister Renal Centers, CMEs, and Educational Ambassadors) to plan a coordinated approach for the next two years in their area and serve several purposes:

• To provide Regional Committees, participants in ISN supported programs and other interested local individuals an opportunity to meet directly with selected ISN leaders to strengthen the connections between ISN and the region.
• To provide a setting where everyone in a region who is working on an ISN Program (Fellowships, Sister Renal Centers, CMEs, Research and Prevention projects, the Educational Ambassador program) to meet together to discuss and provide feedback on the programs.
• To promote interaction and networking between different ISN Programs that are being conducted within the same region.
• To provide ISN leadership with a better understanding of local and regional needs through direct person-to–person interactions with leaders in the regions.

Deadlines

Applications should be received at least 3 months prior to the start of the meeting.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for support, a CME meeting must have a formal scientific program as well as national or international attendance of at least 70-100 participants. Classroom type courses for in-house faculty are not considered eligible. A one-day CME meeting can be incorporated into a national or international conference of nephrology. A stand-alone meeting should have a program of at least 2 full days.
