Dr. Richard Johnson

The

International Society of Nephrology (ISN) is pleased to announce that Dr. Richard Johnson has accepted the invitation to join the ISN Council as an interim member until June 2005. Dr. Johnson will replace Councilor Thomas Coffman, who had to resign his position to avoid a conflict of interest after having been elected to the ASN Council. Dr. Johnson was the runner up for

North America

in the 2001 ballot, where Dr. Coffman was elected.

Rick is currently the Chief of Nephrology, Hypertension and Transplantation and the J Robert

Cade

Professor of Medicine and Professor of Physiology and Functional Genomics at the

University

of

Florida

in

Gainesville

. He graduated from the

University

of

Minnesota

, trained in

Washington

University

,

Seattle

, and subsequently served as Chief of Nephrology and Director of Renal Transplantation at Baylor College of Medicine before taking his current position in

Florida

.

He has received many highly

prestigious

awards, co-edited a leading textbook in Clinical Nephrology and published over 320 original papers.  His major scientific contributions include studies examining the role of the

glomerular

endothelial cell in maintaining

glomerular

health; the role of

mesangial

cell proliferation and phenotype change in

glomerulonephritis

; mechanisms of

glomerular

injury and repair; mechanisms of

tubulo

-interstitial injury and scarring; the role of

angiotensin

-II, proteases, ischemia and oxidative stress in progression; the association of HCV with

glomerulonephritis

and of salt-sensitive hypertension with subtle

mictovascular

and interstitial renal injury, and many other important topics.  He also has collaborated on studies exploring the epidemiology of kidney disease in

Peru

and mechanisms responsible for the development of kidney disease at high altitude.
