This ISN webinar will bring understanding around the nature of an emerging epidemic of unknown origin, the burden of disease in these conditions and will discuss potential pathophysiologic mechanisms.
Description of the Webinar
A chronic kidney disease epidemic of unknown origin has emerged in the last decade in Central America and has been named Mesoamerican nephropathy or CKD of unknown origin. This form of CKD is mostly present in young male individuals from communities along the Pacific coast, most often workers in the sugarcane fields and who have a history of manual labor under very hot conditions in agricultural fields. Clinically, they develop mildly elevated systemic blood pressure, asymptomatic and progressive reduction in GFR, low grade proteinuria, hiperuricosuria and progression to ESRD.
