This manual provides an overview of the use of various techniques to assess a renal biopsy. Technical procedures for allocation and processing and staining the renal biopsy for light microscopy, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy, and procedures for commonly used special stains are provided.
The manual is now available in English, French, Spanish and Russian. The French version was translated by Prof. Sandrine Florquin. Translation to Russian was initiated by the Russian Dialysis Society and made by Dr Olga Vorobjeva from the National Centre for Clinical Pathology Diagnostics.

Agnes B. Fogo and J. Charles Jennette are experienced renal pathologists, based at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, respectively. They both have long-standing interest in education. Dr. Jennette is an editor of the main renal pathology textbook, “Heptinstall’s Pathology of the Kidney”, and is renowned for his work in ANCA-associated vasculitis. Dr. Fogo is an author of “Diagnostic Atlas of Renal Pathology”, and her work has focused on FSGS and potential for regression of glomerulosclerosis. |
