Global Outreach (GO) Programs

Global Outreach (GO) Programs

The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) has assembled a committed group of volunteers dedicated to building health equality worldwide. By making the knowledge and experience of the developed world accessible to kidney doctors and other specialists in emerging countries, it is improving kidney care and prevention strategies around the globe.

Arguably one of the largest medical specialty outreach programs in the world, the ISN Global Outreach (GO) Programs offer a broad range of educational and training activities to the developing nephrology community. Many of these take place onsite and respond to local needs.

The ISN GO Programs are committed to the following principles that govern its activities throughout the developing world and specifically in countries and regions most in need of better renal care. Through these programs, ISN has contributed to the decrease in frequency and impact of kidney disease around the globe.

  • The prevention and regression of chronic renal diseaseRSharma_in_Nepal
  • Improving provision of clinical renal care worldwide
  • Improving education of nephrologists, primary care physicians and other health professionals
  • Raising public awareness about kidney disease, particularly in the context of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes
  • Providing training that focuses on the areas of epidemiology, clinical pharmacology and clinical trials
  • Initiating and supporting research projects to demonstrate efficacy of early screening for renal disease
  • Sharing ISN GO Program experience with medical leaders in related disciplines around the world

Organization and Structure

Under the leadership of its Chairman, the ISN GO structure includes five core programs, eight regional committees and the CKHDP committee. This well-designed organization increases interaction and collaboration between the different programs, maximizing efficiency and sustainability throughout all the activities.

The organizational structure, illustrated below, is designed to increase synergies, collaboration, help develop appropriate strategies for sustainable development, and apply them in a holistic approach.  For more information on a specific ISN GO committee, please visit their dedicated webpage.

Ad-Hoc Programs

Tanzania-Access to Care Program

The ISN Global Outreach (GO) Programs provide access to ad-hoc programs such as the Tanzania Access to Care Pilot Initiative launched in 2006. This program focuses on saving children and women of childbearing age with Acute Renal Failure using Peritoneal Dialysis. More information on this project is available under the Africa Committee Section of the Gateway.

Chronic Renal Disease in Morocco: Early Detection and Intervention Program

The ISN GO Programs, the WHO and the Moroccan Ministry of Health have agreed to jointly support this program which consists of a study covering the measurement of prevalence of renal disease in a rural and an urban area. After the initial screening phase, a treatment phase will be carried out in order to follow up on the subjects who tested positive. More information on this project is available under the Africa Committee Section of the Gateway
