Between the talks and debates at the recent World Congress of Nephrology, the ISN awards were handed out to those who have made exceptional contributions to nephrology.
All generations were nominated including younger nephrologists in the developing and developed world. Here is a roundup of the winners who were given their prizes at the congress in Cape Town, South Africa.
ISN Jean Hamburger Award
Dr. Manikkam (Suthan) Suthanthiran is the 2015 recipient of the Jean Hamburger Award, which was first introduced in 1987 and is granted for recognizing outstanding research in nephrology with a clinical emphasis. The award was established in memory of Jean Hamburger – considered the Professeur de Paris, pioneer of clinical nephrology and founding president of ISN.
ISN Roscoe Robinson Award
Dr. Georgi Abraham is the 2015 recipient of the Roscoe Robinson Award, which is granted for excellence in education of nephrology and medicine. The award was established in memory of Roscoe Ike Robinson, the internationally-recognized physician, educator, and researcher, founding Editor of Kidney International and ISN Past President.
The Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize for Advancement in the Understanding of Polycystic Kidney Disease
Peter Igarashi, M.D. and Gregory J. Pazour, Ph.D. are the 2015 recipients of the Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize for Advancement in the Understanding of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). Both were chosen for the award in recognition of their excellence and leadership contributing to the goal of developing treatments and a cure for PKD.
ISN Alfred Newton Richards Award
Dr. Barry M. Brenner is the 2015 recipient of the Alfred Newton Richards Award, which recognizes outstanding basic research in fields relevant to nephrology. The award was established in memory of Alfred Newton Richards, who developed renal tubule micropuncture in his laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania where he served as chairman of pharmacology for over three decades.
ISN Bywaters Award
Dr. Kirpal S Chugh is the 2015 recipient of the ISN Bywaters Award, which was established by the ISN Acute Kidney Injury Committee in order to recognize outstanding contributions to the understanding of acute renal failure. The award is named in honor of Eric Bywaters who first described crush syndrome.
