Interventional nephrology workshop leads EAP visit to Chennai Featured

Dr Kumar EAP ultrasoundDr Lalathaksha M. Kumbar, an interventional nephrologist from Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, USA, visited the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in Chennai, India this March. The department of nephrology is one of the oldest departments in the hospital and its staff were looking for training in interventional nephrology.

Department Chief Prof. P Soundararajan believes that the visit helped boost local renal services as it gave doctors new insights into vascular access and critical care nephrology. The fellows are now well trained in basic renal ultrasound procedures and have the confidence to carry this knowledge forward. They learned how to perform biopsies in real-time focusing on the lower pole of the kidney.

Dr Kumar EAP fellowsDr Kumar rounded off his visit in the outpatient dialysis ward where he interacted with the patients. He found many interesting cases with vascular access problems and guided fellows through the patients’ physical examinations. The trip ended with a one-day workshop specifically on interventional nephrology, gathering some 50 participants from around the country.

Through the ISN Educational Ambassadors Program (EAP), centers in the emerging world can request a teacher or an expert to join them onsite to provide very specific hands-on training or to initiate and develop community based research and screening programs. The program also provides ISN members and younger nephrologists with an invaluable opportunity for personal involvement in the society’s educational programs while enhancing the sense of global solidarity and awareness in the renal world.

The deadline for the latest call for applications has now been extended to May 31st, 2014. You can apply for this ISN Program online HERE.
