ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Colleagues,

It is a great pleasure to invite you for the first joint congress of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis and the European Peritoneal Dialysis Meeting from August 28 until 31 in

Amsterdam

. The motto of the congress is: “From basic and clinical research to optimal care and treatment”. The organising committee therefore welcomes nephrologists, basis scientists, paediatric nephrologists, nurses, dietitians, other paramedics and trainees; in short, everybody who is interested in the various aspects of

PD. The programme consists of invited lectures, symposia, continuous medical education, a paediatric line and a clinical practice line, especially for nurses and dietitians.

The majority of the symposia will be orientated around a clinical problem to which an integrative approach is used: results from basic science and clinical studies will lead to the definition of recommendations for the management of patients. Topics will include among others: survival on PD, cardiovascular mortality, ultrafiltration failure, PD solutions, nutrition, peritonitis, elderly patients,
diabetes
. Guest lectures will be on diabetes and genetics. Also free communications can be presented, either orally or as posters. There will be no concurring sessions during the poster discussions. Direct contacts with industry are possible at the commercial exhibition and during industry symposia. European accreditation, which is interchangeable with that of the American Medical Association, will be applied for. The European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association/European Renal Care Association (EDTNA/ERCA) endorses the paramedical programme. Continuing education credits for dietitians from the American Dietitic Association will be applied for.

I am pleased to announce that a prize for the best clinical- and basic science abstract will be awarded. Similarly, the Dutch Kidney Foundation will award prizes for the best posters. In addition, travel grants are available to young investigators from countries with emerging economies.

The congress is preceeded by educational courses on the basics of peritoneal dialysis for physicians and nurses/paramedics. A separate meeting on animal models, Animod, will be organised directly after the congress.

Amsterdam

, the gateway to
Europe
, is a very pleasant and open city with lots of historical and contemporary landmarks, cultural events and restaurants.

I look forward to see you in

Amsterdam

!
